What gynecomastia is
Gynecomastia is the enlargement of glandular breast tissue in males. It is common during puberty and later in life.
Common causes
Hormonal changes, certain medications, anabolic steroids, alcohol and some medical conditions can contribute. Sometimes no cause is found.
When to see a doctor first
A medical assessment is important to rule out underlying causes, particularly with a lump on one side, pain, or nipple discharge.
Treatment options
Puberty-related gynecomastia often settles without treatment. Addressing the cause may help. When it persists, surgery may combine liposuction with removal of glandular tissue.
Recovery
Most people wear a compression garment for several weeks and return to desk work within about a week.
